The US Justice Department have officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to block the California's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This legal action, submitted to a US district court, targets the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's electoral map represents a blatant attempt to seize control that violates voting rights and undermines the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will withstand court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Latino communities in violation of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Broader Implications
This courtroom confrontation represents the major response by Democrats in the continuing redistricting war that began in Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed public consent, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the majority will shape the final years of the current administration, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its agenda or face resistance, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
