The United Kingdom and the United States have announced a key bilateral deal that will guarantee no import taxes on UK medicine exports going into the US market.

Agreement Details of the Accord

As part of the deal, the UK has agreed to boost expenditure on medicines through the public health system. This pledge guarantees that tariffs on these key goods will remain at zero for a timeframe of three years.

This agreement follows earlier statements to significantly raise duties on patented pharmaceutical products, with figures floated reaching one hundred percent.

"This deal with the Britain bolsters the international landscape for innovative medicines and introduces much-needed balance to U.S.–U.K. pharmaceutical trade," a release declared.

Trade Significance

Pharmaceuticals represent one of the Britain's largest goods shipped to the US, which is easily the largest destination for major companies like GSK and AstraZeneca.

Statistics reveal that in the 12 months to the end of last September, the UK exported medicines valued at over eleven billion pounds to the US. This value made up 17.4% of all goods exports in that span.

"This guarantee safeguards jobs, stimulates capital expenditure and facilitates the UK to emerge as a worldwide center for life sciences," a minister remarked.

Detailed UK Commitments

The deal entails several key changes from the United Kingdom:

  • Price Threshold Increase: The UK will raise the affordability limit at which it deems new medicines to be too expensive by 25%.
  • Boosted Medicine Funding: There is a aim to double overall NHS spending on treatments from 0.3% of the national economy to 0.6 percent over the next decade.
  • Refund Ceiling: The sum manufacturers must refund to the NHS to control costs will be capped at 15%. Previously, repayments topped 20%.

Recent Tensions

The pact follows a long-running row between the sector and the British authorities over drug pricing and approval rates.

These tensions were intensified by assertions that US patients were paying several times more for the identical medicines than consumers in the Britain and the EU.

Recently, several major pharmaceutical investments in the UK have been halted or cancelled, while major funding commitments have been directed toward projects in the United States.

One official stated that the NHS must invest a greater share on drugs, noting that its expenditure on drugs had shrunk as a percentage of its overall budget over the past decade.
