Unconquerable Not Anymore: The Reasons The Indian Test Match Standing Has Crumbled

India's surprising 0-2 defeat to South Africa in the just finished Test series has left the team reeling.

In the final match, the visiting team inflicted upon India their heaviest loss in Test cricket, defying expectations. This represented South Africa's initial series triumph in India in 25 years and the host nation's second home series loss in just 12 months after a 12-year unbeaten run.

The momentum built over the last several months has almost disappeared and the futures of several players - along with head coach Gautam Gambhir - now hang in the balance.

Early Optimism Vanishes

The young team's commendable display in England this season, under a fresh leadership, pointed to a seamless changeover following the close together departures of key players Ashwin, Rohit Sharma, and Kohli.

A straightforward 2-0 win over West Indies at the commencement of the home season enhanced that perception, until the South Africans turned up and handed out a devastating defeat.

India were a tad unfortunate that captain Shubman Gill suffered an injury quickly in the initial match and did not participate again in the contest. Yet that fails to account for the side of the well below standard performance in both Tests against the opposition.

Several established players took a hit, and several players eyeing lengthy Test careers were revealed to be still inadequate - in ability or temperament - for the Test cricket.

A Troubling Pattern

This was the second clean sweep on home soil endured by India in just more than a year. In 2024, little-fancied the Kiwis had achieved a remarkable 3-0 win which essentially denied India a berth in the Test championship finale.

The latest loss to South Africa could damage India's chances of making the showpiece of this cycle as well.

After being third in the Test championship standings before the series, India have fallen to the fifth spot. Although nine further games are yet to be played, five of these are against Australia. Usually, playing at home would be a major plus - even against the powerful Australians. But the disasters against the Kiwis and South Africa leave little scope for such comfort.

Reasons for the Slump

The national team's vulnerability in Test cricket has been badly exposed. Nevertheless, why the team have performed so poorly in Tests on home soil recently is still bewildering.

Since the turn of the century, India were seen as unbeatable in red-ball cricket in home conditions. In demanding climates and on tracks that helped spin and suited their batsmen and bowlers, the hosts faced little challenge. The odd series defeat, such as in the 2012-13 season against the English, was seen as an anomaly.

Now, India appear to be easy pickings in their own backyard.

Facing the Kiwis in last year and South Africa currently, India were beaten at their own game. The surfaces they curated to help their style went wrong completely, as rivals exploited them better, beating India's batsmen and bowlers when it was most crucial.

The Core Issue

Certain analysts propose that the Indian team is floundering at home because home surfaces have been changed from turners to fast tracks to train the squad to perform better overseas.

Others highlight that the IPL, in which numerous foreign cricketers take part, has taken away the mystery and hardship Indian conditions would present to them earlier.

Even though there is a degree of accuracy in both analyses, it still does not explain why the team's showings at home have witnessed such a dramatic drop.

Several Weaknesses

The majority of ex-cricketers diagnose a multi-faceted challenge, not only a few causes.

Experts and participants have identified multiple deficiencies after India's humiliating loss to the Proteas: underestimating the opposition, poor preparation, poor choices, overconfidence, frequent changes of the starting eleven, and favoring limited-overs over Test cricket.

This was evident in the displays of the side.

Members like Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal, of whom great things were anticipated, paid for their nonchalance, while Sai Sudarshan, Reddy, and Jurel - who were hoping to secure their position in the squad - fell short in ability and attitude, facing the fallout for their lackadaisical method.

Only a handful - Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj and Sundar - fulfilled their skill and fame - but inadequately to claim wins.

Management Questions

The review also included the entire setup - selectors and coaching staff were also questioned, driven by disappointed supporters and vocal past stars. In the spotlight of the criticism was team coach Gautam Gambhir.
